Any gamer worth their salt is wary of videogame-movie tie-ins. These games may have decent graphics and sometimes even enlist the voice talents of the actors and actresses starring in the film release, but more often than not the gameplay is lackluster. Notable exceptions include Goldeneye and the Chronicles of Riddick games, both of which are sometimes considered even better than the movies they were based on.

In all honesty, Tron: Evolutions is fine. It’s not as good as Spiderman 2 or Lego Star Wars, or even the previous Tron game, Tron 2.0. However, it’s definitely not as bad as Transformers: The Game or 300: March to Glory. At its worst moments, Tron: Evolutions is repetitive, frustrating, and just plain bland. However, it does have its shining moments. Fans of Prince of Persia and maybe Assassin’s Creed might appreciate the fast-paced combat and movement mechanics, which are heavily influenced by Capoeira and parkour respectively. Free running in this game even makes sense, where the digital landscape defies traditional architecture.

Perhaps the two biggest draws this game has are its story and multiplayer modes. While the plot isn’t spectacular – and in fact is very cliché – it does serve as a prequel to the events of the Tron: Legacy movie. Tron fans may be interested in checking the game out for that reason alone. Multiplayer modes include team and FFA deathmatch, CTF, and light cycle racing, which is worth a try at least once in a gamer’s life.
